This kit is now my go-to large sensor shooting kit. It has the superb look that many are familiar with from Canon 5D shoots, but without any of the hangups of sound, ND filters or ergonomic compromises. The low light capabilities of the C100 and Canon C300 are very good - it means you can light in a naturalistic way that also brings efficiencies and benefits to a shoot.
Bolt on my excellent Ninja ProRes recorder and you upgrade the C100 to the equivalent of the Canon C300 (the BBC's doco camera of choice) - but at half the daily cost. My Ninja has HDD or SSD recording media so you can eject it at the end of the shoot and plug in directly to your edit suite and start cutting immediately.
The key to the C100’s success is the large sensor - giving full HD “film-look” quality and superb control over the depth of field of the images and bokeh. I have a number of Cine-Profiles including C-Log and High Dynamic Range sets. This differentiating factor can mean clients can have high production values in their footage - cost-effectively. The pictures from the C100, in my view, look markedly different to the XDCam cameras. Viewed on set or location via an HDMI monitor the pictures are so crisp and vibrant. Add to that, having the option to throw deep soft focus into the mix is creatively liberating. From a practical standpoint it also means it is easier to get sexy backgrounds for interviews from restrictive office locations that are not at all photogenic.
For architecture, travel, food and product videos this is a particular advantage - enabling still photography quality in HD Video. The other feature that clients are finding of value is the slow-motion facility in HD. This works particularly well when used with camera movement, dolly moves and focus pulls. See the food slow-motion show reel for examples.
The other thing that is very efficient for clients is the cinema camera production workflow: shooting to SD cards I can shoot for hours on very low cost media - negating the need for re-using media, but also allowing copies to be made in camera - no more stopping production to make safety backups to a laptop and hard drive.
